Dear Fellow DU Brothers,
As the President of the Alumni Board, it is my duty to inform you of our recent decision to close the Demosthenean Chapter of Delta Upsilon fraternity at the end of Spring semester 2015. This decision was made by the Alumni Board in conjunction with members of the active chapter, Delta Upsilon International Fraternity and Bucknell University.
The decision to close the House was made based on the results of two unsuccessful years of recruitment leaving our membership with just seven active brothers for Fall semester 2015. This level of active membership is well below the minimum occupancy threshold established under our lease with Bucknell for us to maintain the house as an active fraternity.
The Alumni Board, the University and Delta Upsilon International Fraternity remain committed to the re-opening of the House following a brief closure period and as soon as a qualified pledge class can be identified.
As Alumni Brothers, over the course of the next year, we will be seeking your support to ensure the successful re-opening of the Demosthenean Chapter of DU at Bucknell. We will be seeking your support to achieve the following:
- Increase representation and participation on the Alumni Board. We would like to grow the current membership of the Alumni Board from our current nine members to fifteen over the next six months. So if you are interested in participating, please contact us.
- Raise funds to meet the capital requirements to re-open the house. We need to be in a position to ensure the successful launch of the house by providing the required funding. So if you are interested in making a contribution, please contact us.
Please know the primary focus of the Alumni Board at this time is to ensure the re-opening of our House and the successful return of Delta Upsilon to Bucknell. We want to bring our House back to its former greatness and position on campus as the best fraternity with the best group of men. To this end, we would like to hear from you regarding your thoughts, concerns and wishes regarding the re-opening of DU at Bucknell. Please feel free to reach out to me or any other of the Alumni Board members listed below.
Please also be aware, pursuant to the lease with the University, we have been notified that the University may elect to recapture the House and its associated property for non-residential use. As part of this recapture and consistent with the terms of our lease, the University would be responsible for providing the Demosthenean Chapter of DU with a replacement free standing housing facility elsewhere on campus. Please know that while no official action has been taken by the University in this matter, based on the master plan for the University, the recapture of the House for non-residential uses seems inevitable. We will keep you apprised of any future developments regarding this matter.
We welcome your thoughts and need your participation at this time in our history.
We have been purposely brief in this letter conveying our decision to close the house. Please know there was an enormous density of thought and effort that went into all aspects of this decision. Should you have any specific questions or require any additional information as to any aspect of this decision or if you have any concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me or any other of the Alumni Board members listed below.
We look forward to reinstating DU at Bucknell with your support.
